Project Length: one day

For the Environment

One thing that my family always has a plethora of is plastic grocery bags. Before bringing your own bags to the grocery store was more known, my family would use the plastic bags they have at the store. When you end up going to the grocery store once a week for a family of five, the bags start to accumulate.
Rather than taking the bags to a bag recycling center, I thought I would just recycle them myself. I used them as stuffing for my stuffed animals, pillows, and then I heard about plarn. It turns out that people all over the internet had started to turn their plastic grocery bags into yarn for crocheting.

Making the Yarn

Plarn is relatively easy to make, you just need scissors and plastic grocery bags.
I start by flattening the bag and folding its length five times.
Then you can cut off the handles of the bag. I typically save them for later to stuff other crochet things with.
The next step is to cut the bag into strips before attaching the strips to each other with a small knot.
I do this until I get bored and want to start crocheting.

The Bag

This bag and the yarn were all made in a single day. It took 26 white plastic grocery bags to make this purse. This purse is big enough to hold my phone, wallet, and some mints. The strap is made perfectly to fit and stay on the shoulder. The strap is long enough to wear cross body as well. I have had my first plarn purse for almost two years and it's still intact.
